Three steps to becoming an effective leader

There are three steps to the foundation for becoming an effective leader.
  1. A clear picture of what an effective leader looks like
  2. A tool to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of your leadership at any point in time
  3. A way to determine the leadership roles for which you are best suited and in which you will most likely succeed
A clear picture
An effective leader is not someone in first place ahead of everyone else or someone who merely holds a position of leadership. An effective leader is someone who is going somewhere worthwhile. Ultimately, the only one who knows what will be worthwhile in the end is God, and the only way to know if you are heading there is to determine whether you are following God.

An effective leader is also someone people are following. Since you as a leader have 100 percent responsibility for ensuring that your organization reaches its goals, you have to take 100 percent of the responsibility for leading your followers so that they perform to your expectations.

A helpful tool
An easy tool to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of your leadership at any point in time is to ask yourself two simple questions, and then use a 10-point scale to answer them:
  1. How closely am I following God?
  2. How closely are people following me?
Note that God never contradicts His written Word. Therefore, everything God leads you to do must coincide with what the Bible tells us about His will for our lives.

Which role is right?
The third step of the foundation is being able to determine the leadership roles for which you are best suited and in which you will most likely succeed. Not all leaders fit all leadership roles. If you are well suited for your role, you are more likely to enjoy it and be successful in it. If you find yourself in a role that is not a good fit, there are ways to change the role or to change yourself. Finally, sometimes you just need to resign or not take a position that is not the right role.
