A mass evacuation recommenced Dec. 15 out of the once rebel-held eastern Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city and home to a large number of Christians. As of Dec. 16, it had been halted yet again.
As many as 100,000 residents began fleeing the city in the cold rain Dec. 13 after the government forces declared victory and warring parties announced the end of hostilities. But fighting resumed within a day, complicating the evacuation’s progress.
We invite you to pray with us at World Vision for the people of Aleppo and for our operations to bring desperately needed relief to children and families.
Pray that the children and families of Aleppo will be ushered to safety.
Children remain in peril as families seek refuge outside the city between bursts of fighting. Many of the evacuees are sick and wounded children, some unaccompanied by their parents or caregivers, according to UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake. “However, hundreds of other vulnerable children, including orphans, remain trapped inside [eastern Aleppo],” he said. “We are extremely concerned about their fate.”
God of miracles, we ask You to lift the children and families of Aleppo to safety (Job 5:11). Let their suffering end. May they find the food, shelter, healthcare, clothing, and care they so desperately need to help them heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually from the wounds and scars of war.
Pray that all parties involved in the conflict will lay down their arms.
“As we go about our holiday preparations, the families and children of Aleppo are literally being massacred,” says Rich Stearns, World Vision U.S. president. “We must never lose our capacity to feel outrage when human beings are so callously slaughtered, and then we must turn that outrage into action.”
Prince of Peace, in Psalm 120:7 the writer laments, “I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.” Like the psalmist, we are grieved and outraged with the continuation of fighting that has destroyed the city of Aleppo and put thousands in jeopardy. Bring Your peace to bear on this complex situation that has crushed the lives of so many.
Pray for World Vision’s work with Aleppo’s evacuees and other displaced Syrians.
World Vision is preparing to serve people displaced from Aleppo. Plans include providing winter supplies like blankets and mattresses, clean water and sanitation services, food, and emergency supplies in the regions north and west of Aleppo. We are currently helping about 100,000 people fleeing recent violence in the area, working in the Tel Abiad, A’zaz, Jarabulus, and Manbij districts within the Aleppo Governorate.
Gracious Lord, World Vision is among several humanitarian groups trying to serve the residents fleeing Aleppo as well as all the Syrian displaced people and refugees. This latest round of evacuees have nearly insurmountable needs. But You multiplied bread and fishes, so we know Your power has no limit. We ask for efficient processes to aid the vulnerable quickly, strength for weary staff, and blessing for our generous donors who are funding this work.
