5 Ways Your Church Can Pray for an End to Human Trafficking

by World Vision Church on July 3, 2015

Children are a precious gift from God. As adults, we have the privilege and responsibility to care for them and help them live the full and abundant life God desires for them.

Sadly, love and security are not the reality for the millions of children who suffer from exploitation. Some 300 million children worldwide are believed to be subjected to hazardous physical labor, commercial sex exploitation, and child trafficking. This month, join us in praying for an end to child exploitation and for the children who remain trapped in this nightmare today.

1. Pray to eradicate the root causes of child exploitation.
At the heart of child exploitation are massive issues, including extreme poverty that leads parents to sell their children into indentured servitude. Sometimes they are tricked into believing that their children will work in a wealthy person's home and will be treated fairly. In fact, many are held as virtual slaves. Throughout the world, sin leads people to put their desires above all else, ignoring how they destroy the lives of innocent children. Ask God to do what only He can — soften people's hearts and heal their minds.

Dear Lord, Your Word calls us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, a righteousness that leads to compassion for the poor and a renewing of our minds. Lead us to this kind of faith that works to make a better world for all Your children.

2. Pray for the safety of children in hazardous working conditions.
According to "Children in Hazardous Work," a report from the International Program on the Elimination of Child Labor, 115 million children are involved in the worst forms of child labor, including mining, construction, scavenging, domestic work, and agriculture. UNICEF reports that two-thirds of child labor is in agriculture. In rural areas, children begin agricultural labor as early as age 5. Ask God to keep them safe as they struggle under heavy loads and work with unsafe tools and harsh chemicals.

Dear Lord, You see the children who work long hours with little to eat. You know that they are tired and more likely to get hurt. Please keep Your precious children from harm.

3. Pray for supernatural protection.
The criminals who exploit children roam the world like the predators they truly are, looking to prey upon the vulnerable. They use lies, threats, coercion, and violence to force children into sexual and other exploitation. This is a business of supply and demand. As they look for their next victims, ask God to eliminate the "supply" and blind their eyes from seeing any children in their paths.

Dear Lord, Your Word is filled with accounts of miraculous protection. We claim that power for vulnerable children. Make Your little ones invisible to those who would seek to exploit them. Whisper in the ears of the children to run and hide until the danger passes.

4. Pray that families will have opportunities to move beyond poverty.
Poor families with little opportunity to earn income often feel they have no option other than to have their children help earn income. As families receive the knowledge, skills, and resources to lift themselves out of poverty, the need for their children to contribute to the family income diminishes. Ask God to continue to equip organizations like World Vision to provide the basics parents need to provide for their families.

Dear Lord, thank You that You are providing opportunities for families that struggle in poverty. Please continue to equip World Vision and other organizations working in Your name to reach even more of these families, empowering them to walk into the fullness of life You intend for them.

5. Pray for eyes to be opened.
Child exploitation isn't just a problem "somewhere else." It is an issue everywhere, including all 50 states in the U.S. UNICEF estimates that approximately 300,000 American children are at risk of commercial sexual exploitation each year. Anyone can be trafficked, regardless of race, class, education, gender, age, or citizenship. Ask God to open the hearts and minds of Christians everywhere to recognize the signs of child exploitation and give them the courage to take a stand.

Dear Lord, Your Word tells us that it is a sin to do nothing when it's in our power to help someone in need. Help us to speak out against crimes against children. Prod us to act whenever we suspect that a child is in danger. Don't stop nagging us until we do the right thing.
